antagonized by a vascular vasopressin antagonist, which suggests a role for vasopressin in mediating some cardiovascular responses (2). The cardiovascular effects of oral snuff have been examined systematically in only one study (13). Changes in heart rate and blood pressure that are similar in magnitude to those of cigarette smoking were ob served. However, the time course appears to be slower than the response to cigarette smoking, with maximum effects observed at 5 to 10 minutes after a dose of oral tobacco. Similar findings, along with increased myocardial contractility and coronary, femoral, and renal blood flow, were also noted in anesthetized dogs after the administration of oral tobacco (13). Thus it appears that single doses of smokeless tobacco can produce hemodynamic effects that are similar to those of cigarette smoking. Whether such changes are sustained throughout the day with repeated daily doses remains to be established.

Effects of Prostacyclin (PGI2), 6-oxo-PGFla and PGE2 on Sympathetic Nerve Function in Mesenteric Arteries and Veins of the Rabbit In Vitro
Prostacyclin is the principal product of prostaglandin (PG) endoperoxide (PGH,) metabolism in rabbit mesenteric arteries and veins, as assessed by synthesis of 6-oxo-PGFla. Formation of PGE,, PGD,, PGFfc, and C17-hydroxyacid of PGH, (HHT) were also detected but arose probably from non-enzymic decomposition of PGH,. The effects of prostacyclin (PGI,), 6-oxo-PGFla and PGE, on sympathetic nerre fu...

متن کاملPhysiological concentrations of epinephrine potentiate thromboxane A2 release from platelets in the isolated rat heart.
The isolated rat heart perfused with washed platelets was used as a model to examine platelet-vessel wall interactions. Release of prostacyclin and thromboxane A2 was measured, using a cascade of smooth muscle bioassay tissues or radioimmunoassays of the stable hydration products. In hearts perfused with rabbit or human platelets, injection of sodium arachidonate caused release of both prostacy...

Article history: Received on: 08/03/2013 Revised on: 04/04/2013 Accepted on: 14/06/2013 Available online: 30/06/2013 We studied the effects of cotinine, the major metabolite of nicotine, on nicotine-induced decrease in prostacyclin (PGI2) synthase activity of microsomes from isolated rabbit heart after sympathetic stimulation. Rabbit hearts were isolated along with their sympathetic nerves and ...
